Option 1: Course Reflection Paper

This assignment gives you the opportunity to reflect on some of the sociological concepts you have learned about over the last 5 weeks and to apply them to your own life. It allows you to demonstrate what you have learned and is intended to be thoughtful and conversational in tone. It is not a formal paper, but good reasoning and clear writing are still expected.

Select one of the following options and complete paper according to the instructions:

Option 1: Course Reflection Paper

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper that discusses one to three concepts that you learned about in this course that affected your understanding of yourself or society. What caught your attention and why? For example, you could discuss one of the theoretical perspectives, the social construction of race or gender, the sociological imagination, a theory of development, or an institution you understand in a new way. For each concept you discuss, complete the following:

  • Define the concept in your own words and cite a real-life example that illustrates it.
  • Explain the major social implications or phenomena that relate to this concept. Why is an understanding of this concept important for society?
  • Explain the personal importance of what you have learned. How has your view of yourself or society changed? How might you use your new knowledge?

List your references according to APA guidelines, including links to any websites or online articles your paper refers to.

Option 2: Personal Reflection Paper

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper that discusses the two most significant socializing forces in your life. For example, you may want to discuss how educational institutions have affected your worldview, or how role expectations have influenced your perception of who you should be. In your analysis, complete the following:

  • Define and explain each socializing force using concepts and theories covered in class. Be sure to cite real-life examples of any concepts or theories you cite.
  • Describe the impact that each socializing force has had on your personality, beliefs, or behavior. How has the socializing force influenced who you are, what you believe, and how you act?
  • Compare your experience with these socializing forces to the experiences of someone of a different gender, race, ethnicity, or social class. How are your experiences similar and different?

List your references according to APA guidelines, including links to any websites or online articles your paper refers to.
