You will enrich your understanding of college faculty by frequently making connections between principles and issues discussed in class to real-world situations.  Academic issues are prevalent in higher education and receive significant attention in various outlets (e.g., The Chronicle, Inside Higher Ed). Given the rapid change among faculty issues in higher education, studying these emerging issues more closely provides a clearer picture of academia. Each student will be assigned a date within Weeks 2 – 7 and will need to write a blog post connecting a recent issue in the newspaper with class readings.  Articles must focus on issues related to the academic profession, not simply news within higher education (e.g., rising tuition rates, admission trends). Your post should educate your colleagues on the issue, your reflections, and connections to course readings. The blog post will be assessed on the following elements: the main ideas you took away, how it relates to other readings (complements or contradicts), questions raised or answered in your mind, and an overall judgment on the merit of the readings. Your focus should be on the depth of the reflection and not just writing.
Â
Responses
To actively engage with your colleagues and the emerging issues, you will craft a response to the blog posts. This can be done by analyzing the article from a different perspective, and/or making different connections to the issue. The requirements/grading are the same regardless of whether you do the initial post or the response. Students may engage with blog posts via comments and short responses but that will not meet the requirements for this assignment.

This assignment requires you to do one initial post (where you select the article) and two responses. Each post is worth 80 points.
