In qualitative research, large data sets are necessary to fully understand the complex phenomena.  Trustworthiness and data management are vital to the success of qualitative studies.  The management of large qualitative data sets can lead to numerous challenges in particularly establishing trustworthiness of the study. This is why it is important to be able to manage volume of date. 

There are eight recommendations that will help ensure rigour for studies with large qualitative data sets:

1. The importance of the organization of the study cannot be underestimated. One person must take on the role of managing the study. The organization of staff, scheduling, data collection, data analysis, and the data itself is essential to the success of the project.
2. Diligent documentation of the data collection and analysis details is required, even for changes in approach or rational. This task is should be assumed by one person on the research team.
3. Ensuring a strict timeline for data collection, coding, and analysis is essential.
4. Every effort should be made to use an iterative process for data collection and analysis.
5. At a minimum, conduct a comprehensive internal audit at key points throughout the study.  Encouraging researchers to undertake an external audit to further increase the credibility of the study.  
6. Regular communication between team members is critical to ensure quality completion of the study. Regular email contact, phone conversations, and face-to-face and teleconference meetings are recommended.
7. Adequate resources are required to ensure timeliness and quality of results. Resources include both financial and human resources.
8. Maintain a good sense of humor and build in time to reflect and have fun. The commitment to large qualitative research is enormous and requires a team effort, with diversion from time to time. 

   Following these steps will enable researchers to complete a rigorous, qualitative research study when faced with large data sets to answer complex health services research questions.
