Review several of your classmates’ posts, and respond with a minimum 150 words to at least two who discussed an advantage or disadvantage different from your own.  Elaborate on the relevance of their findings to the context of the standards movement.  Challenge your classmates by asking a question that may cause them to reevaluate or add components to their initial response.

 In every job, profession, and or career there will always be standards. Before I read this chapter I was truly against the common core. I then realize that the part I didn’t agree with was just a tiny fraction of what the overall goal is. Standards are necessary in order to measure the learning that takes place in one school or placeagainst other schools and other places. One student in Virginia could be getting a better education in Math, versus another student in California. All because that is what the state requires. The U.S. Department of Education has declared that “all states and schools will have challenging and clear standards of achievement and accountabilityfor all children, and effective strategies for reaching those standards.” As a result, the Common Core State Standards initiative has been created .(Hall, G.E., Quinn, L.F., & Gollnick, D.M. (2014).  Introduction to teaching: Making a difference in student learning).(ch. 11)

 I believe to insure that this country does not fail our future, we need to make sure all school meet these standards. The advantage being that everyone will be ready to move forward to the next level of their education and be confident doing so.  Every child should be on the same page and know the same curriculum as another child across the country.

 The one disadvantage that I see with this is that every child learns different. My son has brought math homework home and the Common Core version is a lot different from the way I was taught. It is almost more confusing than before. I had a really hard time understanding the purpose of why it has to be taught that way.

 I do not agree when it states, At the Common Core Standards website (http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards), the National Governors AssociationCenter for Best Practices, Council of Chief State School Officers state that “standards do not tell teachers how to teach, but they do help teachers figure out theknowledge and skills their students should have so that teachers can build the best lessons and environments for their classrooms. . I believe they are telling teachers how to teach, for instance, Common core math has to be done a specific way. If the child doesn’t understand then they are out of luck. The teacher has to teach the child exactly the way they want the children to learn via Common core, versus being able to teach Math like they used to, and just make sure that the children are at the same level. It shouldn’t matter how you teach them just as long as they understand the curriculum. Like I said before, every child is different and should be given the opportunity to learn a curriculum which best suits their needs as an individual. If the child understands the Common Core way, great. If not, then the teacher should be able to try a different approach, perhaps the old school way.
