Your final exam will consist of 2 different topics; you will choose one and write a 2-page essay in response to the topic you choose.  Each topic will revolve around two reading selections that you have read and discussed this semester. In your essay, you should quote appropriately from the reading selections mentioned in the topic you choose. You will not receive the topics ahead of time.  You will have 3 hours in which to write your final exam essay, but you may not exceed this time limit or your essay will be considered to not have met competency standards and will not pass.  Your introduction must contain an opening, appropriate context, and a detailed thesis statement that identifies the argument you're making about the works. Your body paragraphs should contain a topic sentence, support for its claim (argument), appropriate, integrated and cited quotations, and use of transition. Your conclusion should explain the relevance of your overall argument or make some other final (and relevant) point.  As always, contact me if you have questions. Your final will not pass unless you include support in the form of quotations from one or both stories. Remember that you must pass the final with a C in order to pass the course. As I've said since day one, carefully read the instructions before rushing to write. In response to ONE of the topics below, write a thoughtful, well-balanced essay.Â
Length/Formatting: As an in-class essay, this paper does not have rigorous formatting requirements. Be sure to distinguish between paragraphs. You should plan to write a well-developed intro, appropriate body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. You must write an entire, complete essay. Focus on your thesis statement, your argument, your organization, and your use of quotations. You must use quotations from the text as support in each of your body paragraphs. Your paper should be around 2 pages.
You have 3 hours to write this essay. Your paper must be submitted within this time frame. If you encounter technical difficulties, contact me. This will not allow you time to revise, so plan accordingly.
Citation Style: Be sure to cite your quotations using MLA style parenthetical citation. A works cited page is not required for this assignment. Parenthetical citation is required when quoting or paraphrasing.
Exclusions: You may not use ANY outside sources for this paper, including notes. You may use copies of The Write Stuff, a dictionary, and a thesaurus.  Do not use the internet for "help" with your essay; this constitutes plagiarism.
