Choose one of the short stories you read in this course.  Consider the elements of a short story you learned about in unit 1 (plot, climax, resolution, conflict, characterization, setting, mood), and write a 3-5 paragraph analysis of the story.  An analysis encourages you to think about the author's choices and the significance of these choices (how and why the work was written).  Be sure to address specifically how these elements directly impact the overall meaning and theme of the short story. Write an essay in which you analyze and evaluate the development of a fiction story from the readings. Poetry or nonfiction will not work for this assignment.  The essay should contain an introduction, body, and conclusion, be 1-2 pages in length, typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font, size 12. Please save as a Word document and submit as an attachment to be graded.

• Explain which story you chose and briefly summarize the plot.
• Identify key choices the author made in writing the story. For example, consider where the story is set, how the action is ordered, or how the characters are introduced and developed.

Charles Dickens was not only an author but one of the most important social commentators of his time, who used his writing as a tool of expression for his criticisms of Victorian England.  After reading the selection from Charles Dickens’ “Hard Times”, choose one of the following topics to find out more about, and write a clearly developed and well-formed research paper on your chosen topic.  Follow the writing process and use APA format to cite sources used.  Use the following two websites to help you in your writing:

1. Dickens was a strong champion for children’s rights in a time when children were treated as property.  Research and discuss some of the abuses of children during Victorian Times.
2. Research and discuss classism in England during Victorian Times.  What were the social classes of this time?  What problems were caused because of classism?
3. Research and discuss the role of women in Victorian England.  What were some of the abuses of women?

Each essay should be well developed with a clear intro with thesis, body paragraphs that support, and a conclusion.  Your essay should be a minimum of 500 words and have a corresponding works cited page of all sources used.
