How climate change is impacting the world.
Sea Level Rise Due to Climate Change Causes Mass Migrations
The number of people displaced to due to sea level rise flooding their communities is only expected to rise as the arctic ice caps and glaciers continue to melt. In addition to the flooding of homes, sea level rise also causes salinisation to creep further inland resulting in the contamination of drinking water as well as the contamination of previously arable land for agriculture production.
Bangladesh While this is a global issue, some places will be hit harder than others, depending on their topography and proximity to coastlines. Being one of the most densely populated countries in the world, along a coast known for its increasingly frequent and intense cyclones, Bangladesh is a country highly impacted by climate change, and more specifically, sea level rise. It
is also a country most vulnerable to land erosion, water contamination, and farmland destruction caused by sea level rise due to its flat terrain. According to World Bank estimates, about 350,000 Bengalis migrate to the
country’s capital, Dhaka every year. Bangladesh is also estimated to see over 20 million people displaced by 2050. As of now, it has just been internal displacement to cities located inland within the country. However, with its already ultra dense population, the cities of Bangladesh can only absorb so much migrants until the country needs to seek displacement of their people abroad, making this issue a growing threat to global security.
Economic Impacts
As a developing country, Bangladesh already has a fair share of economic development issues it faces. But when adding sea level rise to the mix of things, it only slows their economic growth. Due to the contamination and erosion of farmland, Bangladesh’s agriculture sector takes a huge toll. This
alone can contribute to the slowing of reduction poverty and malnutrition. Mass migration also contributes to these issues. In addition to imbalances in food production, climate change and sea level rise have a severe impact on the country’s infrastructure which is one of the solid foundations of a sustainably developing economy. With all of the issues posed by climate change, Bangladesh’s economic growth has the potential to slow and decline drastically. It is vital for the country to react to these issues early on. Ethical Issues
Climate change not only further crowds the country’s cities, but it also poses a variety of health risks from waterborne diseases breeding in the mix of floodwaters in slum areas. In general, having to migrate can change
someone’s whole life in a variety of ways. It requires having to adjust to a new environment, and more importantly adjust to a new way of surviving both financially and physically. The following is an excerpt from to put things into perspective: Back in their village in Bhola, AlÂAmin’s wife Fatima used to work on the family’s farm and care for their children. Now, in Dhaka, she leaves her five children in their tinÂroofed shack to clean someone else’s house. Her conclusion is as simple as it is stark: “Nature has changed my fate and my social status."
To reiterate, as of now, mass migration due to sea level rise seems to be only a national issue for many countries. But it might not be too long until these economic and ethical implications become international issues. Bangladesh is already beginning to prepare their people to adapt to becoming a citizen of any country. Another issue to consider is the fact that each country already has their own share of problems to address so I think that the international community should not wait until that time comes to create negotiations regarding mass migrates of climate change refugees.
