supervision concept

Question description

Please answer each question with an 60 word count.

Supervision: Concept and Practices of Management, Ch. 1/Changing Landscape of Business

1.         Daniel, Great post and I agree.  Businesses are changing especially due to technology.  Twenty years, computers were just becoming common place.  Now a days, the computer needs to be updated every 30 days to keep up.  No matter what, the changes make a supervisor or managers job more difficult to keep up to date. Permuth, Rettle, and Scott (as cited by Leonard & Trusty, 2016) discuss some of the trend they found in figure 1.4 .  "the ongoing influence of information and communication technologies: Social media will continue to impact every part of the society" as you discussed, this has had a tremendous impact on organizations" (p. 12).

How do you think immigration or the global environment will affect workplace trends in the future?

Supervision: Concept and Practices of Management, Ch. 1/Four Schools of Management

2. What are the four schools of management thought and how do they compare or differ?

3. This method is not only discussed by Leonard and Trusty (2016) as employee centered, he discusses that actions a manager must consider, such as:

  • "Analyze the tasks associated with each job. Use the principles of science to find the one best way to perform the work.
  • Recruit the employee best suited to perform the job; that is, choose the person who has the skills, aptitude, and other attributes to do the job.
  • Instruct the worker in the one best way to perform the job.
  • Reward the accomplishment of the worker. Taylor believed that workers were economically motivated and would, therefore, do the job the way they were instructed if rewarded with money.
  • Cooperate with workers to ensure that the job matches plans and principles.
  • Ensure an equal division of work and responsibility between managers and workers" (p. 9).

Does this method make sense to you as a practical method in an industrial or production based business?  Would the functional approach be a better fit?

Supervision: Concept and Practices of Management, Ch. 2/skills

4.         What are some different skills that a manager must possess and why do they need to have a variety of skills to be a good supervisor?

Supervision: Concept and Practices of Management, Ch. 3/Planning

5.         Why is planning so important in the management process?

Supervision: Concept and Practices of Management, Ch. 4/Diversity

6.         What is the definition of diversity and what are the legal protections put in place?

7.         What might be some reasons that cause some employees to feel the need to join a labor union?

8.          It is often said that planning is the most important managerial function. Do you agree? Why or why not?
