Each response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or more of the following points:

• Do you agree with your classmates’ perspectives? Why, or why not? Be specific.
• Ask a specific question to encourage further discussion on the topic.
• Challenge your classmates’ interpretation of literature and/or point of view.
• Do a small amount of research and share what you learn with your peers about the topic discussed in this post.

 

 

 

Reader Response Criticism:
Using this approach, you use the text and interact with it as an individual. It will read differently to each individual that reads it. This is where the reader can bring in their own thoughts and feelings that they have felt throughout the story and use them to find meanings within the text. This can show the many different sides of a story and bring out point of views for others that they might not have seen while reading.

Formalism or New Criticism:
With this approach to critical reading we use only what is in the text to analyze the literary elements inside the story. There is no outside research done pertaining to the author or the history of the piece in which we would use to find meanings. Using this you would use just the text and find the tone, moral, and other elements to greater enhance the analysis of the piece of work and understand the meaning. It’s almost best to think of the text as the only object to go off of while writing about it.

I find these two approaches very similar. In both you would use the text to find meaning within the story. Even though one uses personal interaction as a reader, I feel they both start with the same base of just using the text. I do believe that the personal feel of a story might be a little bit lost within the Formalism approach but not entirely. Also, if a reader using the Reader Response would like to research more into the author or time period of the piece’s conception they might find a little more justification for their thoughts. So as much as these two are alike by using the text to find meaning I see that Reader Response gives a little more freedom in interpretation.

The approach I find most useful is the Reader Response style. This is what I believe stories were written for. They are meant to bring out emotion and thoughts while reading and inspire readers to take it as they wish. If you want to know more about something, having the freedom to do so with this approach is amazing. I also believe this helps each find new meanings in a piece of work while sharing thoughts and ideas with peers.
