Mini Writing Assignment:
Write in ten different ways: "I don't want to have a relationship with you any more." In your brief essay (including the ten different ways), speculate on how the different ways of saying the same thing enabled you not only to repeat it in different ways, but also, how each way of saying it gives you a slightly different insight into the "idea" of ending a relationship (does anybody remember the Paul Simon song "There are fifty ways to leave your lover"? ["Step out the back Jack", Make a new plan Stan", etc.]). This assignment (I hope) will enable you to see how copia is not solely a device of repetition for oral style's sake, but also may be used sort of like brainstorming as a way of gaining insight into a concept, idea, feeling--whatever! This same insight, and the process of its recognition, may be conveyed in a speech through the use of copia. The use of copia--of strategic repetition--may enable the audience to participate with you in the construction of the insight, adding to the speech's credibility by giving the audience the impression that they arrived at the insight with you through a creative process.
