Part 1:

The theme of this poem is the glory of adolescence. We can see this by the way the poem points out “left school” and “thin gin” (Brooks, 1960). These would be the ways young individuals would just celebrate the life they have and freedom of responsibility. One device used it rhyme throughout the entire poem. Starting with the first line reading “We real cool. We/ Left school” (Brooks, 1960). This is a clear rhyme that continues on thought the poem. The second device easily found is its dactylic rhythm. Naturally when you read this poem you stress the first syllable out of the three that make up each sentence. Both of these devices help with the way a person will read the poem. The lack of filler words gives almost a young slang twist to the way the speaker of the poem is talking.

Part 2:

The poem was a completely different experience listening to another read it than myself. I mentioned above that I read it with a dactylic rhythm, although, my interpretation and reading as such was different than the author. I had a lot less emphasis on the first syllable and a lot less emotion into the words overall. Having a voice aloud put a lot more feeling into the reading of the poem. I do believe now that reading a poem aloud brings a lot more out when analyzing it. It helps you figure out the rhythm a lot easier. Mostly for myself I had the feeling change. I know when analyzing I shouldn’t become stuck on that but it brings out a motivation while completing the task. Words come off different aloud than in your inner voice.
