THINKING IT THROUGH:

An overview of my internship experience (0-35%)

(Due 7/29/16,unless other arrangements are made prior to due date)

Assignment Description:As you work in your professional internship, take some time to reflect on the value of this experience, i.e., “Thinking It Through.”For this final course assignment, you should prepare a visually appealing and professional MS PowerPoint Presentation, which will provide an overview of your internship experience as well as your own personal reflections.  Include pictures or images whenever possible to support the content and help tell your story!  You must include at least two (2) pictures/images.

 

Even though you are not using this MS PowerPoint to actually make a presentation, you should still treat it as though you were going to make an actual presentation.  Therefore, each slide should contain main points with sub points and the design should be professional and pleasing to the audience.  You should use bullet point and not full sentences, unless you are displaying a quote.  Avoid cramming too much information on a single slide.

 

The presentation must be completed in MS Power Point and these guidelines: 

·         Cover Slide - at a minimum this should include your name and the name of the organization you worked for including the dates of you employment and ITEC 448-Section #.

·         Brief Overview of the Company - include information in each of the following content areas:

1.        General Description

2.        Business Strategy

3.        Size of Company

4.        Goals and Philosophies and/or Future Direction of Company. 

It is suggested that you break this up over multiple slides.

·         Role of Information Technology within the Company - include information in each of the following Information Technology areas: 

1.        Technology / IT Strategy - strategic role of IT within the business. This may take some research to determine, although all IT professionals should always know the IT strategy within their own company.

2.        Technologies Used

-         All IT services and products provided from within the company

-         Any IT services and products (describe) provided by outside vendors (list major vendors)

3.        Goals for how IT is used within the company.

It is suggested that you break this up over multiple slides.

·         Overview of Your Internship Duties - Include your job title. Briefly describe your role and discuss the different areas in which you worked. Also, include any new technologies (hardware, software, processes, systems, etc.) that you had to learn in order to work in your position.

·         Summary of Internship Week by Week – Explain your internship in more detail by summarizing each week of your experience of the internship in terms of training, work responsibilities and special projects.  You can also summarize month by month if you had a position where your responsibilities didn’t change much from week to week.  This is a great place to include pictures and images to support content. 

1.        For example: If you worked on deploying new technologies, what were they and how do you support the deployment.

·         Your Personal Reflections and Key Insights- Take the time to reflect back on your internship experience and provide your insights related to: 

1.        Rewarding Experiences:  Share THREE of the most rewarding experiences or favorite aspects of the internship.

2.        Significant Challenges:  Share THREE of the most significant challenges you faced during your internship. How did you face these challenges.

3.        Previous Courses / Connection to Academics - Have any of your previous USC / IIT courses helped you in your internship?  Which courses have helped you and why and/or how?  In what other ways have your academic experiences enhanced your internship experience?  

4.        Key Insights–Key Insights are Ah Ha! Moments that you realize will have a potentially significant impact on your future career. You should include at least three key insights you gained through the internship. 

Key insights are new learnings, skills, practices that will help you as you move forward in your career. For example, they could be ‘words of wisdom’ that you would pass on to another student or young professional.

These insights could be related to key learning experiences, gaining a new understanding of how IT supports the business, new understandings of the world of work in general and/or how to be successful on the job or in the IT industry.

Due Date:Your Thinking It Through PowerPoint presentationshould be posted under BLACKBOARD ASSIGNMENTS, no later than noon, on Friday, July 29, 2016. No late assignments will be accepted unless previous arrangements have been made.
