Universal pre-k exists in Oklahoma, Florida, and, New York. The United States ranks 26th in the world for the 4-year-olds enrolled in early education programs, which is far behind other countries when it comes to preschool participation. In some other countries, almost all four-year-olds are in rolled in some preschool program. Nearly all states have some funding for preschool but for low income families. In 2012-2013 28 percent of the four-year-olds were enrolled in a low-income preschool program. Some small-scale studies show that children that attend preschool are less likely to drop out of high school, get arrested, repeat grades, and require special education services, making them think that government-sponsored preschool is well worth the investment. Preschool needs to be available to all children not just low income families or the disadvantages kids.

Mandatory preschool would require all kids to attend a government based preschool, or could face penalties. The government would provide tax dollars creating a universal preschool. The preschool would be for everyone regardless of the family’s income and would be available for children ages 2-5. Universal preschools would be taught by teachers with credential and have low teacher-child ratios. The people for mandatory preschool see the benefits, like having all children be kindergarten ready. Also, see it as an advantage for the parents who both work outside the home. People against mandatory preschool think parents should have the choice of teaching their children on their own before kindergarten.

The evidence shows that children gain a lot from preschool. "At preschool, they become exposed to numbers, letters, and shapes. And, more important, they learn how to socialize -- get along with other children, share, contribute to circle time," says Parents advisor Kathleen McCartney. Your child will find out how to strengthening socialization skills, compromise, be respectful of others, and problem-solve. Preschool is a place where kids can play with their peers and build confidence and self-worth. The teacher will play games to get the kids to learn like rhyming games or matching games instead of just trying to sit them down and repeat them to the children; they make it fun for the children to learn.Â
