Eng125 How I Met My Husband by Alice Munro, writing homework help

Each response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or more of the following points:

  • Do you agree with your classmates’ perspectives? Why, or why not? Be specific.
  • Ask a specific question to encourage further discussion on the topic.
  • Challenge your classmates’ interpretation of literature and/or point of view.
  • Do a small amount of research and share what you learn with your peers about the topic discussed in this post.

The story that I chose is How I Met My Husband by Alice Munro. Edie and a new in town pilot, Chris seem to develop a mutual attraction but then it is revealed that he is in fact engaged. His pursuit of Edie as well as her response to the pursuit, despite his engagement is the core conflict.

I would consider the theme throughout this story to be coming-of-age. Edie describes an experience she had as a teenager that not only taught her life lessons but ultimately led to her meeting her future husband.

The story is told in the first-person point of view by that of Edie, the protagonist. By using this technique we get the best understanding of who Edie was as a teenager, her ignorance to life at that age and how the experiences she described matured her. Another technique used in the story is Fate. Though the reader is not aware until the very end of the story, every decision Edie makes leads her to meeting her future husband. The third technique, and my favorite, is Epiphany. Edie comes to the realization that she does not want to be a woman that spends her life waiting on a man that will never show. She then decides she will no longer wait for Chris’ letter and live her life.

There are several other techniques used throughout the story such as irony, conflict and climax. However, I believe that it is through the use of these three techniques that the theme of the story is continually expressed. The coming-of-age theme is enforced by Edie’s perspective being constant (first-person point of view), her meeting her husband when she was initially waiting for her letter from Chris (Fate) and her sudden realization that she no longer wants to wait for Chris (Epiphany).
