The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien a story that talks about the soldiers in the battle field. Lt. Cross, was the character that interest me. As I could relate to him in a personal level with 3 deployment under my belt. It is not always easy to focus on the mission in hand when you are trying to figure out your personal life. I was a leader to that led my Platoon in 2 deployments to battle and I completely understand how the fatigue plays games with your mind. Lt. Cross explain what are the essentials of survival and what his men carry. He identifies how even in the simple reality of essentials everyone varies based on your beliefs and you background. Some carry bibles as others carry dope. As for LT. Cross he carried letters from a woman that he question whether she loved him or not. She kept him sane but at the same time kept him distracted. Being a leader takes a great sort of responsibility and commitment. You are responsible for the soldier beneath well being and most importantly lives. you have to ensure that their are physically, mentally, and emotionally ready for the war and the mission. His distraction was Martha, he was so focus on the thought of her he starting lacking on discipline and ensuring everything was dress right dress as we would say in the military. Meaning everything was in order and where they were suppose to be. But, after the death of Lavender he realized that Martha was going to have to wait. That he had to get his platoon back and mentally ready, he had to be more aware of the surrounding and ready for combat. Lt. Cross, gives a brief description of some of the member's of his platoon and explained what they carried. This gave us the opportunity to connect with every character mention in this story. We were able to understand how some require more weight than others or why some soldier carry different things. But it also made us aware that everyone has the essential responsibility to carry their own survival kit. It shows that regardless of our background we all make it work. We all understand that what is important to one is not necessarly important to the other. And that regardless of personal problems you have a responsibility in the battle field you therefore you need to ensure that you "STAY ALERT STAY ALIVE" HOOAH. As saying we were always told.
