Eng125 Della, in “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry, writing homework help

Each response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or more of the following questions:

  • Did your classmate acknowledge the complexities in the character he or she chose? If so, how so? If not, what should he or she consider?
  • Are there other conflicts that your classmate should consider? For example, if your classmate primarily discussed a character’s external conflicts, offer an internal conflict that the character faces, or vice versa.
  • Does your classmate adequately connect the character with the setting? Are there details that he or she did not discuss but are important to the story? Why are these details important?

Della, in “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry (1906) interested me because of the choice that she decided to make for her love. Her selflessness to do whatever it took. Della decided to chop off her beautiful long hair to get enough money to buy Jim a worthy Christmas present. Now, she faced an internal debate because her hair was so long and beautiful and her Jim loved it. I think the setting really helped put it into perspective on how they lived and how long she saved just to try to buy him something nice. They were not considered a prosperous couple but that does not mean that they lived like the wealthy or poor. They were wealthy in love but poor in decisions. While they sacrificed their most prized possessions to give the other a most precious gift that will forever show unconditional love. The art of selfless giving is beautiful. Most people nowadays will not give unless they get something back in return. It is kind of like a mother’s unconditional love for her children and always providing for them, whatever they need. That is the moral of the story of “The Gift of the Magi.”
