After reviewing the materials for the chapter, I have gained more insight as to how a personal
brand is developed online. The first greatest challenge would be communicating with others
online on a regular basis being that it can be time consuming. Since everyone has different
experiences, views, and opinions it is crucial to acknowledge what others have to say while
consistently maintaining my own personal point of view. The next greatest challenge would be
building an online presence since it is important to create differentiation from other social
media profiles. Building credibility and popularity can take time since popular brands are usually
spread through word of mouth. The last greatest challenge would be to constantly grow and stay
sharp by keeping up with technological changes and trends since I personally am not a fan of the
radical transformation of social media.
Developing a personal brand online, in itself, is going to be very challenging for me. I’m not one
to put a whole lot of information out there for everyone to see, nor do I want to. I do have
Facebook, but that’s the only one. I don’t understand any of the others since I don’t use them.
As discussed in Chapter one there are four stages for the basic model popularized by Dan
Schwabel; discover, create, communicate, and maintain. Discover, Step #1, is where we learn
about ourselves and how to make our brand unique. It is also where we develop a personal value
statement that briefly describes why we are worth it. I think this step could be challenging
because you really want a statement that is going to pop, and grab as many persons attention as
possible. Step #2, Create, will be another challenging one for me as I stated in the beginning.
Reason being is because I don’t know anything about creating a website. I welcome the
unknown, but it’s intimidating all the same. And then Maintain, Step #4, is where we want to
continue to keep our brand fresh and exciting so that we don’t lose attention. Continuing to be
creative is a valuable key to this step to ensure the security of my site.
