My idea of a healthy community is one where there is clean air, clean water and low crime rates.  Also, I would like to have sidewalks in an ideal community. If the community had sidewalks that would promote more physical activity.
A person’s health is a product of their environment. Access to a quality education, safe and healthy homes, adequate employment, transportation, physical activity, and nutrition, in addition to quality health care. Unhealthy communities lead to chronic disease, such as cancers, diabetes, and heart disease (What is a Healthy Community, 2012).
According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of infirmity. A healthy community as described by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2010 report is one that continuously creates and improves both its physical and social environments, helping people to support one another in aspects of daily life and to develop to their fullest potential. Healthy places are those designed and built to improve the quality of life for all people who live, work, worship, learn, and play within their borders -- where every person is free to make choices amid a variety of healthy, available, accessible, and affordable options (About Healthy Places, 2014).
Based on Health Resource in Action research, the top 20 elements of a healthy community are as follows:
While these are common elements across organizations, individual organizations may have additional and/or variable elements defining a healthy community as it relates to organizational mission (Elements and Common Principles of a Healthy Community, 2015).
How would you provide care for a community if your idea of a healthy community does not match your community’s definition of a healthy community? You could try to supply the community with the necessities that it would need to be a healthy community. Clean water, decrease pollution, healthy foods and education. Provide health care and preventive health services.
