Response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or more of the following points:
Writing about literature is a way to further explore and understand a story. It is also a way to reflect on their experiences while reading the literature they are now writing about (Clugston, 2014). When a writer chooses to write about literature, it may help us better understand or interpret what we initially could not when reading it ourselves. There may have been certain aspects a reader overlooks that the response to writing has brought to light.
When I am finished reading, I typically think of simply my personal opinion of the literature. I reflect on the portions that evoked strong emotions from me, both positive and negative. I am hoping that I can develop skills that will teach me to reflect on literature in a more diverse way. Hopefully in a way that allows me to take my interpretations and further explore them.
In Chapter 2, it teaches us to Connect, Consider and Conclude when writing about literature (Clungston, 2014). Rather than just conclude with your opinion, these chapters teach us to take our opinions of literature and explore them to see not just the entertainment but its connection to the real world. I have read “The Road Not Taken” prior to this class and I only ever reflected on the second to last line “I took the one less traveled.” After reading these chapters and the poem again, I didn’t just think of my personal feelings about that one line. I began to analyze the poem, line by line and connect it to life experiences in many aspects before coming to a conclusion.
