Imagine you are a classroom teacher of preschool children. You include a dramatic play center in your classroom for children to use daily. Dress-up clothes, props, and a variety of other materials are available for children to explore. A concerned parent approaches you after school one afternoon, explaining that her son continues to come home and talk about how he plays “princess” at school with his friends. He excitedly explains that he and his friends pretend they are characters from a familiar movie, and he really likes playing princess everyday. The parent asks for your professional input about the situation.
