To become proficient in geriatric assessment, you need to understand the physiologic changes unique to this population, as well as the differences between normal aging-related changes and health alterations caused by illnesses and social changes” (Cary & Lyder, 2011). The geriatric population is expected to almost double in size by 2030 and nurses need to be prepared with strong assessment skills to keep hospitalizations low and their quality of life high. Seeking information on their medications and exact dosages is very important in any age group but especially in the elderly. Commonly the elderly take more than any other age group on average. Also knowing their pre-existing conditions is very important and to be able to know their baseline. Assessing their orientation in the elderly is also a very vital part in their assessment for questions and gathering information. As a person gets older they become weaker and it could decrease their quality of life and become more dependent. Certain factors such as their gait and loss of balance and risk for falls is important to know in the elderly population assessment. Their state of mind is important to assess because becoming more dependent could cause them to be depressed. (Cary& Lyder, 2011).
