It is important that closer attention must be paid by the healthcare professionals and nurses to different things during the older population assessment. The assessment of geriatric includes the assessments of functional status, mental status, pain, economic and social status, and assessment of physical surroundings for safety measures (Ward & Reuben, 2016). Mental status of an individual includes memory, attention, visuospatial skills, language, and orientation, the cognitive function of an individual such as decision making and planning. Pain is to provide comfort for helping maximize the gathered information. The functional status of an individual includes execution of routine activities and daily life tasks and sensory capabilities as well. Economic and social status of a person includes his relationship with family and friends.

It is important that the changes in functional status and mental status must be observed which determines the ability of the patient to deal with their promotion of health on their own and take care of themselves. Transformed cognition is not usual aging part therefore it is necessary that closer attention must be paid by the nurses to the chances of the inception of dementia. It is needed that the nurses should assess the hearing and visual abilities of the patients. Loss of vision and hearing occurs with aging. The daily life activities are greatly affected by the hearing and vision loss and it is the duty of nurses to ensure a safer living environment for patients.  While during the skin assessment of the patient, the skin breakdown must be examined. This is usually observed in the patients in a hospital setting and long term care facilities. The poor healing ability of patients indicates that meals are not taken properly by them. Therefore, nurses must make sure the proper food intake of such patients.
