The Man of the Crowd
The Man of the Crowd states IT was well said of a certain German book that “er last sich
nicht lessen”- - it does not permit itself to be read in (Poe, 1845, para. 1). The fact that not all
secrets can be told and not all judgments can be made with just a glance becomes evident as this
story unfolds. We read about a man recovering from serious illness (the narrator), who seems to
be so alone, that he is content just to be in a crowd of people, even if not to have direct contact.
The man also seems to find some comfort in focusing on something other than his own recovery.
The message is clear that although there may not be personal relationships or direct human
contact, that when in a city filled with people, one does not need to feel alone.
The narrator is described as a frail man, recovering from illness, who indicates that he
was just returning strength, after months of illness and that merely to breathe was enjoyment and
