Food dyes should certainly be outlawed in the United States. Food dyes are synthetic petroleum-based chemicals that do not occur in nature. Utilizing colorings, natural or synthetic, usually indicates that a natural ingredient is not used. Some foods are artificially colored with natural substances such as beta-carotene or carmine but even these are not entirely safe. Many of these dyes have been linked to numerous problems and diseases and, most notably cause hyperactivity in some sensitive children.

Red 40 is the most widely used food dye, mainly in junk food. An FDA review committee acknowledged flaws in mouse testing but said evidence of harm was not "consistent" or "substantial". The FDA is careful to choose their words carefully when publishing information or opinions related to food dyes. Regarding possible cancer links, the FDA consistently uses statements such as does not pose a significant threat to humans, no substantial evidence to support, reasonable certainty of no harm, or the risk is so minor that persons consuming the product should feel reasonably confident.

This is yet another example of individuals trusting and depending upon the government to make wise choices which will pose little or no risk. Individuals must learn and educate themselves in order to make better choices for themselves and their families. Although may of these dyes have enough evidence to indicate they are likely harmful, various industries with unlimited funds are able to persuade officials to turn a blind eye to the harmful effects; therefore, we must make the choices individually. After reading and researching for this assignment, I will certainly make more educated and better choices for myself and my family in the future.
