Using Leadership to Empower Others

The quote as identified by our 6th President John Quincy Adams, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more you are a leader,” is a statement that by timeline had to have been made between 1787-1848. Fast-forward to 2017, and reference material for this course identified by Ingram and Cangemi (2012) incorporates similar verbiage identifying leaders needing to create a culture that “inspires and moves associates to pursue goal attainment.” The words may be different but over and over in our resource material the connotation is the same.  Supporting and guiding people to reach their highest level of self-actualization, in hopes that the reward to society is a more globally centered participant would be the highest assessment of success. The fact that 169+ years later the thought on leadership from such an antiquated place tends to question evolution, or the quest to evolve. Is the ongoing battle to see more, do more, be more when it comes to who we are really a new concept or are we constantly just revising the same plan around new technology and life developments but treating it as if it were a new concept.

As my leadership assessment was a balance of servant and transformational, I feel that the personal mission attached to my leadership rests with very similar vision. The purpose for my attending school for this terminal degree was to help break down the barriers between executive healthcare leadership and staff nurses. The goal being to empower both sides to objectively respect each other’s’ position, participate collaboratively and to feel supported and protected as each goes to work in high stress roles every day, tasked to safely and responsibly care for others with the highest professional standards possible.
