Problem/Solution Essay
This paper must include:
1. In-text citations
2. A reference page with a minimum of 5 entries
3. A title page
4. A call to research in the conclusion
*There won’t be a second chance to redo your essay if you leave out the in-text citations this time.
This paper must meet the length requirement of 1,000 words, which is around 4 pages. Use the word count tool in Word to make sure your paper is long enough.
Organization
You must give a direct thesis that states both the problem and the solution. Notice that there are three controlling ideas with the solution.
Ex: Many children suffer long-term consequences of bullying; however, the problem can be remedied through a three-pronged approach: educating the parents, encouraging a community atmosphere, and implementing a peer mediation program.
You may add sub ideas to the main idea of your thesis, and you may use controlling ideas that detail the problem in a different way; it’s totally up to you. I’m not prescribing a specific organizer this time because I want to see how well you can organize your work without having as much help. Remember, a topic sentence must state the main idea and the controlling idea. So, as long as your TS states the problem/solution and the specific focus of the paragraph, you’ll be fine. Please submit your outline on time (Thursday by midnight) so that you can make any adjustments you may need to.
Content
The P/S ratio doesn’t have to be exactly 50/50, but it should be close. If you would like to spend 40% of your body discussing the problem and 60% on the solution, that will be fine. You just want to make sure that you don’t have percentages that are way off balance.
Critical thinkingis a big part of this assignment, so your development must be especially thorough. Consider the following questions. Also, please note that the answers to these questions could be worked into nice body paragraphs or even just supporting details depending on how you detail them and organize your information.
For the problem…
· Define the problem. Really explain what the problem is so that any reader could understand.
· What causes the problem?
· Why is the problem as bad as it is?
· How does this problem affect people, and why should they be worried?
· Will this problem have a huge impact on the future or worsen if nothing changes?
For the solution…
· Define the solution. Every reader should be able to see how the solution can lessen the problem.
· How will the problem make things better?
· What can be done to carry out the solution?
· Who can help make the solution a reality?
· How does the solution work?
· Are there any possible drawbacks to the solution? If so, can they be improved upon?
