Title: Is Uncle Ben Crazy?
Intro Para: Chinua Achebe’s story entitled “Uncle Ben’s Choice” portrays a complex colonized society. On the one hand, there is the traditional Igbo culture some may call “primitive.” On the other hand, the British culture with capitalism and Christianity is evident. This paper maintains that the author depicts Uncle Ben as an insecure, neurotic by-product of this mixed environment.
Para 1+:Ben’s lack of separation from his Father and avoidance of intimate relationships shows his immaturity. (relies on Father’s advice, hides from women)
Para 2+:Furthermore, his behaviors and remarks suggest he has conflicting views about the modernized setting. (embraces job, bicycle, housing, drinking, clubs…but fears doctors)
Para 3+:Ben’s neurosis comes to a climax when he collapses. (Reliance on Matthew, confusion)
(Optional short historical Para: background on colonization)
Rebuttal Para: Normal reaction to situation? No- dependent on advice of others, excessive drinking, hint of womanizing, use of hyperbole shows instability more than style…
Conclusion: Summary plus something extra- refer to thesis
Citations- history of colonization in Nigeria?; Achebe’s views/biases?
