In this class, we began with a discussion of the roles of business in society.  We discussed things such as:

* The discipline of Business encourages entrepreneurs to supply society with necessities – the transformational process of raw materials into useful products

* The discipline of Business provides people with jobs & livelihoods – the means to prosper

* Profitable organizations provide government with tax revenue – to enforce codes and level the playing field

* Effective businesses reinvest profits into the Economy – acquiring land, equipment, and hiring employees

* Well-run organizations provide people with the opportunity to express their calling through their vocation

* The business enterprise is meant to serve others in this earthly realm; and ultimately to carry out the creation mandate (Gen 1:28-30) to be fruitful, productive and wise stewards in the harnessing of the resources given by God (Pearcey, 2004)

Now that you have had the opportunity to study the primary functions and roles of business use this information and knowledge to discuss how businesses in the 21st century either comply with or contradict Biblical and theological precepts and mandates. 

How do you see Scripture discussing and/or addressing business transactions and operations?  

Do you see Scripture as only supporting non-profit firms or are for-profit firms a viable option? 

Discuss how business profits should be utilized and what role should the government plays in business operations?

Project Outline: 

Define the role of Business based on your understanding of scripture, the Genesis 1:28 mandate and the needs of society.

1. Build a theoretical foundation for operating a business based on Biblical principles:
   1. On what key scriptures would you build your foundation?
   2. What other principles need to be considered?
2. Define practices that flow out of this philosophy.  For example (choose at least 4 of the following or add your own):
   1. Business transactions (how we exchange)
   2. Business operations (how we do “business”)
   3. What to do with profits
   4. Role that government should play in helping businesses compete and be successful (if any)
   5. How businesses treat their people
   6. How businesses manage technology
   7. How businesses view stockholders AND stakeholders
   8. Your business’s view of its social responsibility
   9. How businesses view globalization
