In making predictions about the future it is sometimes difficult to anticipate the future. In 1970, there were several predictions on Earth Day about what future awaited us because of our disregard of the planet. Life Magazine wrote that, “Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….” (See http://www.ihatethemedia.com/earth-day-predictions-of-1970-the-reason-you-should-not-believe-earth-day-predictions-of-2009 for more predictions.) Why do you think these predictions were so wrong? What do individuals making predictions need to do to make their predictions more accurate? Do you think that some of the global warming or climate change claims may prove to be true, or false?
