Application of the Normative Ethical Theories

Assignment 1: Application of the Normative Ethical Theories

  • 15% of your final mark
  • Length: 1000 ±100 words
  • Submit after completing Units 1 & 2 (approximately 5 weeks into the course, according to the recommended schedule).
  1. Choose ONE of the cases that appear in Units 1 & 2 of the Philosophy 333 Study Guide except Case 2. 1. However, please refer to the discussion regarding Case 2.1 in Unit 2, under the heading "Applying Normative Theories to a Moral Situation", as an example of how to apply moral theories to a case.
  2. Clearly state a professional ethics issue that pertains to the case. It is recommended that you state your issue in question form.
  3. Choose TWO out of the five moral theories studied in Unit 2, but only one version of Utilitarian theory at most (e.g. notboth Act and Rule Utilitarianism).
  4. In essay-form[1], and in one document, apply each of the two theories to the case, focusing on your stated issue, by doing the following:For each theory, provide an explanation of the theories basic approach to moral evaluation and decision making.
  5. Ethically analyze your stated issue using each of the two theories. The idea here is to adopt the strategy of each of the theories to present what you think is a reasonable and balanced ethical analysis of your issue. In doing so, your aims are (i) to show that you understand how the theories work and (ii) to show that you can use them to express the ethical reasoning that should be brought to bear on the issue.
  6. For each theory, if you think that it would prescribe a certain resolution or answer to your issue, state that resolution. If you think that the theory would not prescribe a resolution per se but, nevertheless, would offer some insights into how the case and issue should be dealt with, explain the insights it would offer.

The case chosen is as follows

Case 2.2

[12]

Dr. Cee, a veterinarian with a well-established practice in a small city, saw Ms. Kay's dog, Sandy, in March 1987. Dr. Cee diagnosed Sandy as having a rare blood disease. He knew of only one experimental treatment for the disease, but it was extremely expensive, lengthy, uncomfortable for the animal, and had been ninety-five percent ineffective in laboratory testing. Ms. Kay decided against trying the treatment and asked that Sandy be euthanized because she did not want him to suffer any longer. She was extremely attached to the dog and left him at Dr. Cee's with great sadness.

That afternoon, Dr. Cee began the experimental treatment on Sandy. He felt that most researchers on the disease had made a crucial mistake and that he might be able to treat Sandy effectively. But because he had never tried the experimental treatment and because of Ms. Kay's concern about Sandy's discomfort, he did not inform her. A month later, Sandy was free of all symptoms of the disease. Dr. Cee called Ms. Kay, and asked if he might stop in to see her. She assured him she would be happy to have him drop by. He arrived with Sandy, who was fit and simply delighted to be home again. Dr. Cee explained to Ms. Kay why he had decided to treat Sandy and that he had not told her because he did not want to raise her hopes. He did not ask Ms. Kay for any payment despite the fact that the hours and materials for the treatment totaled costs in excess of a thousand dollars.
