conservative party

Need help answering this question only have to be 150 words. Thank you for your posts this week. I want to touch upon the change in conservatism from the 1960s to now. The conservative party we have now, is not the party that existed with Richard Nixon. Nixon was a centrist. He disliked federal bureaucracy but he tended to back measures that transferred control of funds to states and municipalities rather than cut funding for federal programs.While he preferred to decentralize the power of the federal government, he moved to make the office of the President more powerful. He backed a number of environmental programs, including the Clean Air Act of 1970, and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) was established during his administration. He increased spending on domestic programs, but he insisted that they adhere to efficiency standards. Although he did not overtly promote the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment), he increased the number of women appointed to federal positions and he directed the Justice Department to enforce Title VII (gender equality in federal contracts). He outwardly supported the gains of the Civil Rights movement but tended to transfer responsibility for enforcing them to the states and localities. He stayed in the center by supporting the social and legal change of the 1960s while decreasing federal involvement in enforcing them. Now of course we know how his presidency ended, which led to a bleak and dark period in political history. We can blame the rise of the distrust of government on Nixon's demise, but there were other changes to conservatism underway. While the GOP were involved in social issues, many conservatives in the 70s were supportive of various social initiatives and the party, although not secular, religion was not a central focus. But as the 70s progressed, a new alliance developed (which had its beginnings with Nixon and in the 1960s) which combined religious beliefs with fiscal conservatism. The combination was powerful and it found its leader, Ronald Reagan, whose win in 1980 ushered in a new dawn of American conservatism.
