Purpose

By reading this material actively and closely, you will not only learn about how the American Dream is portrayed in films, but you will also use your active reading skills to see how ideas are formed and how they can be molded into your own writing. As a result, it will deepen your understanding of how the American Dream is portrayed in films and provide some practice with critical thinking and analysis. Also, it will allow you to engage with your peers in shared learning.

Directions

Part 1: Read the articles "Film", “What is the American Dream” and “The American Dream in Films” in this folder.

Part 2: Once you read the articles thoroughly, engage in the following discussion with your peers in the week 6 discussion board.

Consider a film that you have seen which portrays the pursuit of the American Dream by at least one main character in the film.

Apply at least one aspect of the American Dream discussed in the articles (e.g rags to riches) and develop a short, 200-250, word response to the following questions:

1.       What is the film character's American Dream?

2.       How does this character pursue the Dream (e.g through hard work, persistence, illegal means, violence, and other subversive means, etc)

3.       Does this character achieve his/her American Dream?  Why or why not?

4.       Is there a 'cause and effect' stemming from this film? In other words, does this film reflect culture or does culture reflect film?

You must use examples from the reading to support your ideas.

You can also use specific examples of events from the film.

Remember not to summarize but to analyze.
