Correctional institutions and schools are havens for gangs. Gang activity increases the chances of violence and crisis. In this Seminar, you will look at the presence of gangs in these environments, how they can initiate violence, and what forms of intervention can be instituted to prevent acting out.
Think about the types of gangs in each environment, understanding the dynamics of gangs and why they are present. Certain strategies can reduce the risk of violent aggression by these gangs, but unfortunately, schools do not have the authority to implement some of them, whereas other institutions have a little more flexibility.
You will also discuss why gangs are so prevalent in correctional institutions and schools, and how they can be both good and bad for individuals and communities.
