ASSIGNMENT: #1
For this assignment, you may choose one of the following short stories to
summarize, which we’ve re
viewed in class: “Jumping Mouse
or
The Birth
-
mark
.”
Writing Summaries
** When you are summarizing,
it is imperative that you
neither introduce new ideas nor your
opinion into the passage that you are writing.
Be objective
.
Some
Reasons
for Summarizing:
1.
It demonstrates your understanding of the text.
2.
It gives you the ability to take ownership of an idea/concept and
link to or
with other ideas/concepts.
3.
It allows you to provide a shortened overview of someone else’s
work that will provide credibility for your work.
Key Points
for a “Perfect” Summary!
1.
Have a good understanding of the piece you are summarizing.
2.
Be aware of
your audience (academic), as this will determine the
degree of formality with which you write (no first
I
or
second
you
person voices).
3.
Use a signal phrase: introduce the author and the text. If there
is no author, simply state so.
4.
Know the central th
eme and be able simplify it.
5.
Identify the thesis statement or statement of purpose and write
it in your own words.
6.
Be accurate lest you change the fundamental idea conveyed by
the author.
7.
A summary is a shortened version of the original text. Usually, a
paragraph or two in length will suffice.
8.
Typically, a summary contains NO quotations. It is written in
your own words
. So,
for
this
assignment
, please
DO NOT
quote from the primary
source
being reviewed.
A note about formatting:
All your assignments, unless otherwise specified, must be typed in 12 font and
be
double
spaced. Always provide a creative title for your piece. In other words, don't write,
“Summary/Assignment #1.” Please
format
your title page according to MLA standards.
