Essay Assignment (35 pts.)
Our firs
t class discussion was about horror films or other texts that had a lasting or deep
impression on us. For example,
Jaws
(1975) effectively banished an entire generation of
children from going to the bea
ch or any other body of water!
Now, it’s time to turn
that
discussion into a paper, so I can continue to get to know you as a writer. In a well
-
constructed essay (
2
-
4 pages), explain more fully how the text(s) you chose to talk about
in our class discussion made such an impression on you. You can certainly c
hoose a
different text if you’ve thought of something else since the class discussion. And, “text”
refers to a film, novel, video game, artwork, etc. The essay can also include a discussion
about the reasons why this text continues to have an effect o
n you
. Focus on writing
about a text of some sort
(novel, film, video game)
rather than an eerie experience.
Remember: details are critical here; the writing should describe the text
that had an impact on you, what that impact is, and what your reflection is
about that text and its impact. The paper might also expand a bit about the
general term of “horror” and what that genre means to you.
The essay’s title should reflect the content of the essay.
The title of the essay should
NOT be the title of the tex
t the essay is about.
Your
introduction
should include a controlling statement/idea that clearly
describes the text choice and its impact. In your introduction, you should also
include any background information needed.
Remember
:
The titles of films and
novels are
italicized
. Be sure to include the YEAR of release afte
r the first
mention of the film as
shown
above.
IMDb.com
can help.
In the
body
of your essay, you should also explain to me your thoughts about the
text and its impact. Consider too how the genre continues to impact you. The body
paragraphs might also detail the experience you had engaging with that text (how
you felt watching the f
ilm, for example).
Finally, your
conclusion
should bring the paper to a satisfying closure either by
discussing the genre in general or your interest in it, by exploring the reasons for the
text’s impact and lasting effect, or by expanding more on the te
xt or other similar
texts, etc.
The essay should have m
ultiple paragraphs over
2
-
4
pages
the essay should be
organized thoughtfully and effectively for clarity.

(5
pts.
)
After you’ve completed the draft,

type the
heading “Writer’s
Memo,”
and then
compose a
short
paragraph
of
200

words about your completion of
the assignment
(
for comparison,
this paragraph and the next are approximately
220
words)
. The memo should describe your work for the essay and how you accomplis
hed
it.
Some questions to consider:
What process did you follow to complete the
assignment? How long did the assignment take to complete? How many drafts were
needed? Was it difficult to accomplish? What made it difficult? Or, why was it easy for
you?
What
else would you like me know about your composing process? What are your
concerns about the final draft?
Y
o
u
don
t need to talk about the film;
that
s what the
essay is for. I
m
more concerned
about your
writing
process and the steps you took to
complete the assignment.
Total Points for Assignment:
40
pts.
The paper should be edited for gramm
ar and
usage; all writing pet peeves should be
corrected
(
we will go over th
ese writing pet
peeves in class, and you will also
g
et
a writing pet peeve handout)
. The grade for the
diagnostic will be determined by the details and clarity in the writing
and
a thoughtful
response to the assignment prompt
.
The essay is mainly a way for me to get to know
your writing style and patterns
as well as the texts that had a lasting impression
.
Good writing typically includes the following:
An ability to hook the
reader from the first line and keep his/her attention until the
last line
Effective use of detail and description
Clear and lively style
Vivid images and examples
A personal voice that conveys a sense of involvement
Thoughtful and insightful reflection
An
attempt to be creative and unique
Paragraphs that flow from one to the next and build to a meaningful conclusion
Attention to proper grammar and mechanics
