the history of African Americans in that division or unit.

Pick a branch of the military, and then a division or unit, from 1877 to the present. Research in the library or from the course bibliography what kind of treatment and opportunities African Americans received. Describe the history of African Americans in that division or unit. If you wish to use a website in addition to the library or course bibliography, ask my permission. Responses are not required and will not be graded, but I encourage you to engage in discussion with other students. Grading will be with the grading rubric for essays. Therefore, you cannot use the textbook or encyclopedias.

Remember that this is a formal essay and you need an introduction, body, and conclusion. If you receive permission to use a website, at the end of your essay (but not part of it), you must analyze its academic value using the below. You must cite and use at least one academic source.

The CRAP test will help you learn what an academic source is:

  • Currency: How old is it? Is it up-to-date? Or is it a primary source document?
  • Reliability and Relevance: What is the source of the information? Is it relevant to your topic? Who published it? Is it peer-reviewed? Is there a bias?
  • Authority: Who is the author? What are their credentials? What is their field of expertise?
  • Purpose or Point-of-View: What is the author's intention? Who is it written for (which audience)? Is this a primary source or secondary document? Is it a tertiary document (not allowed)?
