leadership’s responsibility

1
It is leadership’s responsibility to collaborate the contributions of community and school
personal to enable the best opportunity for individual student success. Each of these entities
alone is powerful; however, their combined efforts are what is most beneficial for each student.
Collaboration may be even more challenging to achieve within the diverse groups discussed,
regardless of the obvious benefits for all involved. “Collaboration among school staff, mental
health staff, and school and community stakeholders is essential to children's success in school.
Research indicates that family functioning and the connection between families and their
children's school affect academic achievement” (Ackley, 1). The school and community needs to
work together so they both can provide the best school and home environment for their students.
I feel like without these two contribute the students will not succeed. It is important that the
students know that their families and friends support them in their school work. The schools need
to have up to date learning equipments so the students have the access to learn. For the school to
get those things. The school and the community need to work together to collect the funds.
The school and community can set up some types of programs that will make the school
and the community better for the students to learn even it is at school or around their
neighborhood. “FAST is a science based, best-practice model that has been proven to address the
following four goals: (1) enhanced family functioning, (2) prevention of school failure by the
targeted child, (3) prevention of substance abuse by the child and other family members, and (4)
reduced stress from daily life situations for parents and children” (Ackley, 2). One of the
programs is the FAST program, Ackley’s article mention that Fisher in 2003 says that since this
program had started it had proven effective with a wide range of populations. The FAST program
worked for some schools and community because they put in the work and families around that
community wanted their children to succeed so they help fund and run the program. In Ohio, 2
another program they came up was called The Ohio Community Collaboration Model for School
Improvement (OCCMSI). “The OCCMSI derives in part from a growing theoretical and
empirical literature. The international movement in support of community schools—schools that
welcome community empowerment strategies alongside co-located health and social services,
parent and standardized achievement testing, school choice, and alignment among schools,
districts and state departments of education” (Anderson-Butcher, 1). These types of programs
helps the schools and communities in many ways. It brings the schools and communities together
so they can make formal arrangements with individuals, private sector organizations,
associations, or even public institutions. These provides a services and resources that will help
children achieve goals and make better life decisions. These community and school collaboration
are used to enhance both the programs and services offered at the school and at home. It will
increase resources for both the schools and the community partners. Multiple benefits are known
to result, such as improved academic achievement, improved school climate and safety, and
enhanced opportunities for learning.
The programs are not only the key factors for school and community collaborations but
the surrounding and environment the students is also an important factor. If the neighborhood is a
bad area for children like gangs fighting, shooting, loud music and etc. how are they suppose to
learn or have a good night rest for school. Children live in these kind of area, I suggest that
school and the community work together to make an organization and I am sure they have them
where students can go to get they help they need if they are struggling. Most low income families
can not afford to get out these bad neighborhood. The school and community can come together
and make an agreement if they can get an extra hour of sleep or stay an extra hour at school to 3
learn. If the teachers, community and students work together to make things work then everyone
would be able to accomplish what they are suppose to do.
School and Community Organizations plays a big role in collaboration also. “A school’s
contribution of physical resources for club meetings, performances, sports, and other activities is
crucial to the successful operation of the grassroots organizations or neighborhood groups that
have little space to call their own relying on individual resources” (Milbrey, 3). These examples
of resources are important for students to have hands on activities. This will keep fill up their
days after school and weekends. “Many young people told us that participating in community
service projects provided their first experience of being valued by adults” (Milbrey, 3). That is
what most children want to be viewed. They want adults to see that as responsible and they can
give back to the community in any way they can.
