2) D-Mart, a large retail-chain, advertised for an entry-level position in its marketing department. The top four applicants who were selected for interviews on the basis of their resumes were the following: Alice Adams, Bob Brown, Carlos Castendada, and Debby Due. Each had a B.A. in marketing and 3-4 years experience in some aspect of marketing. When they showed up for their interviews, each was asked to complete and extensive "job application" that asked for detailed information, including the following: height, weight, age, whether or not the applicant smoked cigarettes, had ever used illegal drugs, or drank alcoholic beverages; the applicant's living arrangements (marital status, parental status, etc.) and whether or not the applicant engaged in "high risk" recreational activities, such as sky diving or scuba diving.
Â
Alice Adams had a terrific interview, but was not hired. She thinks the reason is that she wrote that she jointly-owned her home with another woman, who she considered her "life partner." Bob Brown interviewed well but was not hired. Since he had extensive experience, he believes the reason must be that he admitted to engaging in adventurous recreational activities. Carlos had an excellent interview, but was not hired. He thinks it is because of his Hispanic background and his refusal to answer questions about his history of alcohol and drug usage, although he wrote that he does not presently use illegal drugs or alcohol and is willing to submit to drug tests. Debby believes she can think of only one reason why she did not get the job: she is 5'4" and weighs 200 pounds, some 60 pounds above the recommended weight for her height. The company eventually hired a man with a B.A. in Physical Education and no marketing experience.
