Exploring Virtue on the College Campus – Case Study

Case Study:

A young man meets a wonderful girl in his senior year in college. He believes this is the one that he might marry in the future. He has dated her for several weeks and believes he is deeply in love with her. He has a problem. After leaving the constraints of parental authority at home, he went wild as a party animal at college. He was very sexually active in his freshman and sophomore years at college. During that time, he caught genital herpes. He does not want to tell his girlfriend about having herpes and he does not want his sister, her close friend, to tell her.

Part 1: 

You are the sister. According to Aristotle and a Virtue Ethics analysis of how to be moral, what should you do? Should you tell your friend that your brother has genital herpes? Why? Include an explanation of how to be moral according to Aristotle and Virtue Ethics, based on your study of the required readings. Integrate quotes and paraphrases and/or core concepts of Virtue Ethics from your study of the required readings in the textbook in order to help support your stance (eudemonia, excellence, golden mean, phronesis, any relevant virtues Aristotle describes, relevant vices of lack and excess, etc.)

When integrating one of Aristotle’s terms from your study of the readings, be sure to put the term within “quotation marks” and to cite it the first time you use it in a paper. (Always put quotation marks around any words, phrases, or sentences taken from a source, and cite each quote and paraphrase.)  



Part 2 (New Development): 

Your brother has made it clear to you that he will not tell his girlfriend he has herpes and he tells you that you cannot tell her. Again, from a Virtue Ethics perspective, does this change your decision about what to do, and in what way/s?



Part 3:

Describe a brief personal or professional example of a moral dilemma (of importance) and apply a Virtue Ethics analysis to your own case, further illustrating your analysis of the case above and your ability to apply Virtue Ethics.
