Previous Assignment for project completed week 1

The world of literature has seen a large production of great talent along the long trail of historical advancement from the classical times to the modern era. Many contributors in the arena of the humanities developed their fields with so much zeal and dedication that it took a few years for them to rise to fame and great repute (Davis& Jenkins, 2015). The major concentration of this discourse is the poetic distribution of the humanities development through the years. Both Henry Wadsworth and John Ashbery contributed tremendous input in the field of poetry during their active lives. The outstanding poets wrote on matters of concern in the American society, but their approach and methodology differed in some areas (Parini&Millier, 2013). In the analysis of the similarities and differences of the two poets, it is evident that both had their works received with lots of reverence and solemnity. Both impacted greatly on the communities within their reach using their works of poetry. The distinct element of their poetry is the theme. While Wadsworth emphasized cultural and moral values such as contentment in life, Ashbery delved into Surrealism where he got involved with resolving contradictory aspects of dreams and reality through graphical messages in his poems (Fisher, 2016). The two prolific poets, therefore, had great influence in their societies albeit in a very distinct fashion.

Body of the Map

Similarities and Differences in Birth Place and Education of the Subjects

There are significant lessons to learn by looking into the similarities and difference surrounding the poets’ places of birth and education. John Ashbery was born on July 28, 1927, in Rochester, New York. His mother, Helen, was a biology teacher while his father, Fredrick Ashbery, was a farmer (Martin&Zox-Weaver, 2015). John Ashbery attended Deerfield Academy-an all-boys school where he began his poetry inclinations. Henry Wadsworth was born on February 27, 1807, to Stephen and Zilpah Wadsworth in Portland, Maine. His father was a lawyer. Wadsworth attended the Portland Academy where he was very interested in studies and became very in Latin. It is evident that both poets had very distinct environmental features during their birth and education as indicated by the fact that Ashbery attended an all-boys school while Wadsworth went to an academy for both genders (Fisher, 2016). It is, however, important to note that they got started in well-structured educational institutions during their childhood. They also have similarity regarding their early education in that both had the outstanding presence in their schools right from the beginning of their academic lives.

Influences of other writers on the Subjects

The work of the two poets also got a lot of influence from other writers during their times. The writers are individuals who made the great impact on the life and career of both poets (Davis& Jenkins, 2015). For Henry Wadsworth, his work got great influence from the work of poets like Robert Frost, Walt Whitman and Edwin Robinson who contributed to the rejuvenation of his popularity. The fact that academics started appreciating the work of these poets made the same impact on Wadsworth’s poetry by shedding more light on the similarities that got exhibited between his work and that of his influences (Parini&Millier, 2013). Dante was also a great influence in the work of Wadsworth as indicated in the translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy by Wadsworth in 1867. The work of John Ashbery also gets influence from W.H Auden and Dylan Thomas (Fisher, 2016). The fact that Ashbery started writing poetry after reading the work of these poet proves the existence of their footprints in his work. He even went ahead to write a senior thesis on the poetry of W.H Auden. That gives the impression that among the works that got influenced by Auden was his thesis.

Works of the Poets that speak of their Individual Attributes

The poets have portions of their work that do just more than pass their sentimental message about the common society. They speak about the intrinsic elements of the poets themselves. These are the works that help in giving a true picture about each of the prolific poets. A good example of the work that gives an individual indication of John Ashbery is the collection title Self-portrait in a Convex Mirror. The collection of poems entails self-reflection of a third person character who views himself distantly as with a convex mirror (Davis& Jenkins, 2015). The work indicates the personal consideration that the poet has of himself that seems as distant as the reflection from a convex mirror. The work indicates that the poet has great consciousness for self-perspective and is also cautious about the false nature of such views of himself. The key idea is a call for personal intrinsic humility and sobriety (Fisher, 2016).

Henry Wadsworth’s work titled Tales of a Wayside Inn serves to give a view of the poet as an individual through the various characters in the poems. The message about his personal nature gets across through the group of adults that tell the poems in the collection (Parini&Millier, 2013). The fact that the setting of the work is in a wayside inn tavern indicates the nature of a taste for luxurious life in the poet. He like music as indicated by the fact that one of his friends, Ole Bull that contributes to the collection of work plays as the violinist. The indication is also that the poet has the great taste of a life of glamour and calm, luxurious enjoyment for the gifts of nature and life (Martin&Zox-Weaver, 2015). That implies a poet who is very sentimental and appreciative of life and lives to its full merriment.

Conclusion

The nature of influence by Henry Wadsworth and John Ashbery, therefore, exhibits two prolific poets who moved land masses regarding societal ideas and norms during their time (Fisher, 2016). The icons stood the test of criticism and distortion forces from the diverse communities to become great elements of positive transformation in the society. Aspects of internal conviction led them towards excellence in their quest for higher responsibility and resilience did not leave their courts even at the hardest of times (Parini&Millier, 2013). For the two poetry giants, self-motivation was key to the eventual establishment of their intrinsic yearning to see an enlightened community (Davis& Jenkins, 2015). They made a significant impact, even though their line of concentration differed in sundry ways.
