Writing Guidelines for your Screening Journal
The Art and Technique of Filmmaking
FTVDM 122B
Prof. Deland Nuse
- We will be screening 4 complete feature films in class during the term. - The journal will provide you with an opportunity to develop your observational
skills and also to utilize the concepts you are learning in class in written form. - Your journals should now be a review of the film. Close observation and
recognition of techniques and aesthetics of the film are the important goals. - Journals should be turned in no later than one week after we have viewed the
complete film. - Grading and evaluation: The Screening Journals are worth 40% points for the
class, that is, 10 points for each one. While the journals are designed to be a low
anxiety form of class participation, there will be some basic grading guidelines. If
you turn in your journal on time and provide a minimal written response to the
film, you will earn 7 points. If it is clear that you were fully engaged with the film,
you can earn up to 12 points. - Before each screening I will post some questions for you to address that should
help you organize your responses to the film. Answer these questions and please
feel free to add personal observations, revelations, or other reactions to the film.
Your thoughts, reactions and insights are important, and we enjoy reading them.
