Main question: Many composers kept diaries during their lives. Choose a composer from the twentieth century and an important event from that composer's life. Consider how this event relates to the music the composer wrote. Write a diary entry related to that event. (Your choice should not be in the Jazz, pop, rock, rap, or other popular music genres.)

Hello, class! This week I decided to talk about Samuel Barber. He was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The event that struck out to me was when he was only 10 years old and he decided to attempt his first opera called “The Rose Tree”. That is awesome for someone who is only 10 to decide such a big task. His family cook helped write it as well. So here is the diary of Samuel Barber:
Samuel Barber’s Diary
Today I reflect to when I was only 10 years old. I think back about the naïve and youth I had at that age. I think about the good days I would have sitting in the kitchen with the family cook and how we wrote my first opera, “The Rose Tree”. I love roses and I felt that is was a wonderful piece. Oh, I wish I could go back to those days when life was so simple and free. That day was the starting point to my career. I wonder if I went back to that day if it would all come out the same or different. Anyways, I think about that day like it was yesterday. Oh, how time really does fly by. I hope I can do just as great as I did that piece to this new piece that I am working on now.
I think this is what he would write about on his free time. Samuel Barber seemed like a great composer. I hope to learn more about him.

Today I finally accomplished my piece called, "Transmigration of Souls." It was a very emotional and sentimental piece not only to myself but to the United States as a whole. September 11th is a day that will haunt me forever and for me to try my best to express our pain, shock, and heartbreak into this composition is what helps me to cope. I intended to try and create an outlet to release emotions and to evoke strong feelings from the listener. I composed this piece in a minimalistic fashion with a soft texture to be soothing as much as it is haunting. It gives me goosebumps imagining those first moments the news spread about the towers and I wanted to depict that into the song and to capture that feeling for future generations. I added the voices and names for impact which I feel creates an eerie ambiance and adds depth. Its simple but can impact the listener strongly and is still a respectful way to present this tragedy. It incorporates soft melodies to help the listener envision this day with its somber tones. I'm writing this entry today to get these excruciating thoughts out of my brain. It's such a painful experience to keep reliving and imagining everything the victims went through. This event has impacted me in dozens of ways and I am sure I can't be the only one. Hopefully this song can impact people in the ways I have hoped. It is my way of honoring the deceased and shedding a tiny light on the dark event in all our lives.
Till next time,

8 March 1924: Dear diary why is it so hard for American composers to get respect over sea’s. Why must there be so much division between American composer and the rest of the world. I admit our music does sound different but that’s part of being creative and unique. What is the purpose of being a composer if every piece sounds the same? We being the American composers want a sound of our own a sound that expresses our lives in America. How can we do that if we continue to compose music using the European style and influence? I’m thinking about introducing England to a jazz influenced piece I composed a few years ago during my piano concert tomorrow. Maybe this will get the American composer the attention and credit we deserve. Out of all my piece I feel “Symphonic Ode” is my greatest work. I also feel it has not received the attention and respect it deserves. My childhood was the influenced behind “Symphonic Ode”. This piece like my childhood was so full of ideas. I wanted people to hear and feel my Jewish heritage. With this piece I hope to gain the respect of composers outside the United States and I hope to influence American composers to continue to challenge themselves to be different and to join me in my efforts to have a different style of music that can be enjoyed by all. I know this is no easy task, but we will never set ourselves apart if we continue down the same path. Until tomorrow, good night.
