Milestone 1: Choosing Topic Selections and Creating a Template – Draft 1 Submission

Milestone 1: Choosing Topic Selections and Creating a Template – Draft 1 Submission

As was mentioned in the Research Project: Milestones Guide and Resources the scenario for your research project is to assume you are in a mid-to-upper level management position and have a significant research role in your enterprise's transformation through the use of information technology. The executive that hired you did so because of your solid working knowledge and understanding of the various information technologies that have proved highly useful during your career.

Completing this project places, you at a virtual time in your future where superiors have assigned you a task for you to investigate and evaluate various technology solutions that, if implemented, might lead to improving the aviation-related company's profitability.

The goal of the project is to expand and clarify your understanding of information systems applications and solutions that are utilized by managers. Working on this research project enhances your professional growth because you will conduct research using primary sources and composing scholarly data.

Required (Current) APA Style Instructions and Guidance

Like your other activities, your research project requires current (Links to an external site.) APA Style when using citations and references for data that you have "borrowed" from another source. This is a critical part of your paper, whether the citation or reference is as simple as a direct quote or something that you have paraphrased. Use to use the Course Specific APA Style Instructions and Guidance web page.

Research Project Current Deliverable

Milestone 1 - Select five topics (from the list provided below), provide a name for your research project, and build an APA Style template. For this part of the project, submit ONLY a "bare-bones" five-page document. The document that you submit is your template, and you will use it for all the research project milestone activities as the course progresses.

Page One: The first page is a properly formatted APA Style Title Page. The Title Page contains a running head (page header) that includes the words "Running head:" followed by the title of your paper in uppercase letters, and the page number. Include the title of your paper, the student's name, the institution's name (ERAU spelled out), the instructor's name, and the date of submission in the body of your Title Page.

Page Two: Center the word "Abstract" at the top of the page. NO other data should be present on this page at this time. You will fill in the abstract data in the following modules as you compose your document.

Page Three: The Research Project Assignment Topics section below lists thirteen MIS-related topics. Choose five topics from the list. You will conduct in-depth research and compose data on each of the five topics that you select. Page Three should ONLY have a bulleted list of the five topics you selected.

Dashboard/Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
Transaction Processing System (TPS)
Decision Support System (DSS)
Cloud Computing
Database Management System (DBMS)
Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW)
Electronic Records Management (ERM)

Mobile Infrastructure
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
Transportation Management System (TMS)
Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM)
Supply Chain Management (SCM)

Page Four: Center the word "Conclusion" at the top of the page. NO other data should be present on this page at this time. You will fill in the conclusion data in the following modules as you compose your document.

Page Five: Center the word "References" at the top of the page. NO other data should be present on this page at this time. You will fill in the references data in the following modules as you compose your document.

At the end of this module's week, submit your draft for the Milestone 1 of your research project. Save a copy of your work and name your document using your last name, first initial, and then the name of the milestone assignment. For example, Jones E Milestone 1.docx (do not use any special characters in the document's file name). Your instructor will grade your submission using the Module 3 Research Project Milestone 1 Rubric. Once you receive the instructor's evaluation and feedback, correct any notated errors (if necessary), and resave the document adding "Rev 1" to the to the file name (i.e. Jones E Milestone 1 Rev 1.docx).

The grade awarded for Milestone 1 is based on the successful completion of the five-page template containing the list of topics, providing a suitable name for your project, and the proper use of current APA Style in the document.

Milestone 2: Research Results and Draft 2 Submission

In your role as an employee at a medium-to-large aviation-related business, it's time to drill down to the specifics for two of the information systems you selected. As you research and compose your data, remember that you are in a mid-to-upper level management position and have significant decision-making influence with your company.

Deliverable

Milestone 2 - Review the five information systems you selected in Milestone 1 and choose two for further research. The goal of Milestone 2 is for you to submit a scholarly document with data obtained from in-depth research on two of the five topics that you chose (you will research the other three in Modules 7 and 8). The data that you submit in Module 5 should correspond to the following:

Document: Open the Research Project document that you worked on previously. At this time, save the document, but rename the file by changing the number of the milestone 1 to 2.

Content: Your Milestone 2 document should provide details of how various departments such as Human Resources, Information Technology, Maintenance, Marketing, Operations, Reservations, and Sales at a medium-to-large scale aviation-related enterprise could benefit from the utilization of some of the MIS technologies that you are studying in this course. Distinguishing how the two information systems will benefit your company, proceed by providing the details and examples of applications and solutions offered by retail vendors. Describe the framework for each solution that the internal staff of your company might develop and implement as well as giving an account of the strengths, weaknesses, and cost considerations for those solutions. Finally, identify and describe how a solution can provide a competitive advantage, influence strategy, affect organizational performance and increase operational efficiency. Unless you are a subject matter expert on the topic, based on your degrees, certifications or “on the job training,” do not submit data obtained only from personal experience.

Sources: Your research should now include a minimum of two primary reference sources outside of the course textbook. The ERAU Hunt Library is an excellent source of reference materials. You can review a discussion regarding primary sources in Academic Resources. Your paper will be screened by Turnitin for citation issues. This modules submission will not be added to Turnitin's database until Module 8.

Warning, you cannot use Wikipedia as a resource, but you may be able to use the references at the end of Wikipedia articles as they sometimes contain scholarly articles. Course Hero is another source that is off-limits as a primary source.

Format: The minimum requirement Milestone 2 is four full pages of double-spaced text (not including title, abstract, conclusion, and reference table pages). Be sure to use current APA Style. Cite and reference any data that you have "borrowed" from a reference source. This requirement is for direct quotes or something that you may have paraphrased. Access Course Specific APA Style Instructions and Guidance for specific tips on how to correctly format citations and reference data.

Writing Mechanics: Your composition needs to be grammatically sound and free of spelling errors. Using terminology from the reference sources will enhance your grade.

At the end of this module's week, submit your draft for the Milestone 2 of your research project. Save a copy of your work and name your document using your last name, first initial, and then the name of the milestone assignment (do not use any special characters in the documents name). Your instructor will grade your submission using the Module 5 Research Project Milestone 2 Rubric. Once you receive the instructor's evaluation and feedback, correct any notated errors (if necessary), and resave the document adding "Rev 1" to the file name (i.e. Jones E Milestone 2 Rev 1.docx). Resaving the modified document with a "revision" filename will assist you in avoiding confusion and submitting corrected data in the later modules.

The grade awarded for this milestone is based on the submission of the corrected (if necessary) Milestone 1 document with four full pages of data in the body of the text and the proper use of current APA Style in the document.

Milestone 3: Research Results and Draft 3 Submission

If you are reading this, you are still an employee with managerial influence at the medium-to-large aviation-related enterprise. Even though you have already investigated two solutions, your "higher-ups" want you to investigate three more information systems. Who knows, you may get a substantial bonus after this project is completed.

When you have compiled the data and composed your work, Milestone 3 of your Research Project will be complete. Milestone 3 is due by the end of this module.

Milestone 3 - Review the remaining three information systems you selected and choose two for further research. The goal of Milestone 3 is for you to submit a scholarly document with data obtained from in-depth research on four of the five topics (you will research the last one in Module 8). The data that you submit in Module 7 should correspond to the following:

Document: Open the Research Project document that you worked on previously. At this time, save the document, but rename the file by changing the number of the milestone 2 to 3.

Content: Your Milestone 3 document should provide details of how various departments such as Human Resources, Information Technology, Maintenance, Marketing, Operations, Reservations, and Sales at a medium-to-large scale aviation-related enterprise could benefit from the utilization of some of the MIS technologies that you are studying in this course. Unless you are a subject matter expert on the topic, based on your degrees, certifications, or “on the job training,” do not submit data obtained only from personal experience.

Sources: Your research should now include a minimum of four primary reference sources outside of the course textbook. The ERAU Hunt Library is an excellent source of reference materials. You can review a discussion regarding primary sources in Academic Resources. Please note that you cannot use Wikipedia as a proper reference as it is not a primary source. Your paper will be screened by Turnitin for citation issues. This modules submission will not be added to Turnitin's database until Module 8.

Format: The minimum requirement for Milestone 3 is eight full pages of double-spaced text (not including title, abstract, conclusion, and reference table pages).

At the end of this module's week, submit your draft for the Milestone 3 of your research project. Save a copy of your work and name your document using your last name, first initial, and then the name of the milestone assignment (do not use any special characters in the documents name). Your instructor will grade your submission using the Module 7 Research Project Milestone 3 Rubric. Once you receive the instructor's evaluation and feedback, correct any notated errors (if necessary), and resave the document adding "Rev 1" to the file name (i.e. Jones E Milestone 3 Rev 1.docx). Resaving the modified document with a "revision" filename will assist you in avoiding confusion and submitting corrected data in the later modules.

The grade awarded for this milestone is based on the submission of the corrected (if necessary) Milestone 2 document with four full pages of new data added to the body of the text and the proper use of current APA Style in the document. The body of the text should now have a minimum of eight full pages of data.

Milestone 4: Research Results and Final Submission

There's a rumor that if you successfully research the last information system topic that you selected, you will be promoted! This is why you have been working so hard! Going from mid-to-upper level management to an executive position in a mid-to-large enterprise is phenomenal; especially in an aviation related field. This is all part of the career plan that you developed at ERAU. Rumor has it that the promotion is because of your thorough research and how your information systems are going to benefit the (medium-to-large) aviation enterprise; not because Uncle Sydney and Aunt Louisa are the Chairman and CEO of the Board of Directors.

Milestone 4 is due by the end of this module. Your instructor will grade your submission using the Research Project Milestone 4 Rubric.

Milestone 4 - Review the last of the five information systems you selected in Milestone 1. The goal of Milestone 4 is for you to submit a scholarly document with data obtained from in-depth research on the five topics. The data that you submit in Module 8 should correspond to the following:

Document: Open the Research Project document that you worked on previously. At this time, save the document, but rename the file by changing the number of the milestone 3 to 4.

Content: Your Milestone 4 document should provide details of how various departments such as Human Resources, Information Technology, Maintenance, Marketing, Operations, Reservations, and Sales at a medium-to-large scale aviation-related enterprise could benefit from the utilization of some of the MIS technologies that you are studying in this course. Unless you are a subject matter expert on the topic, based on your degrees, certifications, or “on the job training,” do not submit data obtained only from personal experience.

Sources: Your research should include a minimum of five primary reference sources outside of the course textbook. The ERAU Hunt Library is an excellent source of reference materials. You can review a discussion regarding primary sources in Academic Resources. Please note that you cannot use Wikipedia as a proper reference as it is not a primary source.

Format: The minimum requirement for Milestone 4 is ten full pages of double-spaced text (not including the title, abstract, conclusion, and reference table pages). The final draft will be a minimum of 14 pages.

At the end of this module's week, submit your final draft for the Milestone 4 of your research project. Your instructor will not be providing feedback and allowing you to correct any errors on your final draft. Be sure to save a copy of your work for the last time. Name your document using your last name, first initial, and then the name of the milestone assignment (i.e. Jones E Milestone 4 Final Draft.docx). Your instructor will grade your submission using the Module 8 Research Project Milestone 4 Rubric.

The grade awarded for Milestone 4 is based on the successful completion of your research project.
