Effective January 1, 2013, the Uniform Crime Reporting Program's definition of rape is, "Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim."

There are many types of rapes and sexual assaults: diminished capacity rape, incest, stranger rape, marital/spousal/partner rape, statutory rape/age-related rape, acquaintance rape/date rape, and gang rape.

Tasks:

For this assignment, create an 8- to 12-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that answers the following questions on rape and sexual assault.

  • Differentiate between "diminished capacity," marital/partner, and date rape. How and why are they different?
  • Identify the different relationships and victims in each type of rape. Assess the role gender plays in rape reporting.
  • Is incest between adults a crime?
  • Describe how your state defines sexual assault crimes.
  • Determine if there is mandatory reporting in your state if you suspect that a child or elderly person is being sexually abused. Explain when you are required to contact the authorities and how to do so.
  • Are there criminal statutes of limitations on reporting rape in your state? Confidentiality laws?
  • What are Rape Shield Laws? What evidence can be admitted in your state? What evidence will be excluded?
  • How has society's reaction to rape changed since the 1950s? Explain in what way attitudes have changed or stayed the same.
