Based on the National Reading Panel, there are five specific factors (phonemic awareness, phonics or word decoding, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) that when properly taught, provide the greatest chance of success for children to master reading skills related to oral language development. Select two and discuss how you might address these factors in your future classroom.

 

Describe the concept of using a dramatic play as an instructional strategy. How does this strategy address oral language development? In what content areas might this concept be used?

 

What are some examples of print that can be accessed and used within the classroom to engage and incorporate print into building literacy skills in students and reading comprehension?

How important is it to incorporate routine into developing comprehension in print concepts in regards to literacy development?

 

 

Assignment One

View the "I Do, We Do, You Do: Scaffolding Reading Comprehension," video and read the To-With-By: A Three Tiered Model for Differentiated Instruction article. Create a lesson plan using the Lesson Plan (provided) on the College of Education’s page in the Student Success Center, introducing a Social Studies topic relevant to a selected grade level, (kindergarten ) emphasizing the use of questions to access students’ background knowledge. Utilize an oral language (e.g. read-aloud, dramatic play or story telling) instructional strategy to enhance reading acquisition skills.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Assignment Two

Research strategies for teaching print concepts using the topic materials. Based on your research, create a list of 10 strategies that teach print concepts. Include the following strategies as the first five in your list, to which you will add five more:

1. Graphic organizers
2. Independent practice
3. Model-lead-test
4. Peer tutoring
5. Repeated reading

Next, select a text from Appendix B of the Common Core State Standards. Using your list of strategies and selected text, write a 500-750-word paper that details three different instructional strategies for teaching print concepts that could be utilized with your selected text. Include a rationale for each strategy you chose.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is/is not required.
