Individual Work

Individual Work

In this week's assignment, you will develop your own personal and professional goals and create action plans to support them.

Goal setting, along with developing action plans to support the goals, is a basic success strategy. Here you are being asked to refine a process you may have already begun.

Consider entering more than one goal and accompanying action plan in each category. The following examples are the sample goals of a recent graduate entering the retail field.

Before writing down your goals, consult the section “Guidelines for Goal Setting”, pages 72 – 73. If you are not currently employed, set up hypothetical goals and action plans for a future job.

Read the Applying Human Relations Exercise 3-1, titled, “Goal-Setting and Action Plan Worksheet,” on page 85 of your textbook.

Create a 1-2 page list of goals and supporting action plans, divided into long-range goals (beyond five years), medium-range goals (two to five years), and short-range goals (within two years).

The following is an example of how to complete each range:

Long-Range Goals (Beyond Five Years)

  • Work Goal: Ultimately become CEO of a major division of a retail company, perhaps the CEO of Bloomingdale's.
  • Action plan: Work my way up, position by position, starting as assistant merchandising manager.
  • Personal Goal: Own a home.
  • Action plan: Save and invest at least 15 percent of my income each year.

Medium-Range Goals (Two to Five Years)

  • Work Goal: Become merchandising manager for one store in a large retail chain.
  • Action plan: Will work hard as assistant merchandising manager, listen to and act on feedback from my supervisors, take courses in human relations and merchandising management.
  • Personal Goal: Finish repaying my student loans and/or credit card.
  • Action plan: Create a budget, design a repayment plan that will maximize my payments in order to lessen interest charges, and be smart with my money by sticking to the budget.

Short-Range Goals (Within Two Years)

  • Work Goal: Do an outstanding job as assistant merchandising manager this month.
  • Action plan: Will take care of more e-mail and other routine work when not in the store. This way, I can put more time and energy into merchandising. I will ask my supervisor for feedback from time to time, so I can make adjustments to my performance.
  • Personal Goal: Get further into digital photography, particularly learning how to take action shots. Will go beyond the “point and click” approach to photography.
  • Action plan: I will study the camera manual more carefully and attend one of the digital photography workshops given at my former community college.

Save your document with a file name that includes your name, course code and section number, and assignment title.
