Kyoto protocol,

This week's environmental controversy focuses on air pollution, mainly the Kyoto protocol. Should the United States participate in the Kyoto protocol? Review the background information. Then, using the References along with resources from your own research, write a 1-2 page response to the questions that follow. Remember to cite your sources using proper APA format.

Background Information

Proponents of the Kyoto protocol state that the U.S. is the largest contributor of greenhouse gases, and that Americans should set an example by signing the treaty and reducing their emissions.

Opponents argue that the treaty is more decoration than substance and that it will do very little to reduce greenhouse gases unless China, India, and other highly populated nations participate. Besides, they claim, why should Americans make further sacrifices to their economy when India, China, and other nations are currently doing much less to protect their environments? Many Americans further argue that any "examples of environmental leadership" provided by the U.S. would be ignored or quickly forgotten by the developing countries as they strive to industrialize and improve the plight of their people.
