“HOWL” ESSAY
On 3 October 1957, Judge Clayton Horn ruled, “I conclude the book Howl and Other Poems does have some redeeming social importance, and I find the book is not obscene.” Write an essay discussing the redeeming social importance of “Howl.”
INTRODUCTION: Write three sentences giving background information about Allen Ginsberg and “Howl.”
THESIS: Use the following as a model for your thesis statement: “Howl” has some redeeming social importance [your assertion] because _____ [the defense of your assertion]. Please underline it and place it as the fourth sentence at the end of your introduction.
BODY PARAGRAPHS: Write three paragraphs of four sentences each defending your thesis. Use at least one direct quotation from the poem in each of these paragraphs!!!. You cannot quote more than three lines of the poem at a time.
TRANSITIONS: Use a transitional topic sentence to start each body paragraph.
ORGANIZATION: Organize your body paragraphs so that each paragraph defending your thesis is stronger than the preceding one.
CONCLUSION: “Howl” is still not allowed to be played at daytime on public radio stations. Write four sentences discussing to what extent you feel “Howl” should be kept away from certain immature audiences.
