Cognitive components represent the thinking process of a behavior. Whereas, non-cognitive include things such as affective or behavioral components. In the cognitive component one can reason that it is wrong to park in a handicap zone, if you have not been deemed handicapped by you physician.  The affective component of seeing this contains the feelings and emotional response of seeing the behavior.Â
The behavioral component, according to Baack (2012), refers to how a person responds to an event. I have personally seen an individual yell at people parking in the handicapped zone. Of course, the one doing the wrong deed always had a 'good excuse'. Â
Many things contribute to the cognitive component of emotional intelligence. Nowack (2017) wrote that lack of sleep contributes to impaired self-regulatory behaviors of leaders. He wrote that people get two hours less sleep today than they did in the 19th century. These leaders that get less sleep have less emotional control. Leaders that lack emotional intelligence are more likely to have adverse moods and poorer personal performance.
In my daily life, I try to use the emotional quotient by being aware of my surroundings. In expressing emotions, I look at the display of emotions by the person I am interacting with. If that person comes in looking sad, I try to show empathy.  In a business setting, I try to keep my personal feeling out of play.
