eSociety: Social Media and Ourselves assignment

I attached all the instructions.

Activity 1 (Image Journal), due Monday 2/27 11:59pm – 7.5% of your grade

eSociety 150b, Social Media and Ourselves

Spring 2017 with Professor Daly

You gather your data in this “Image Journal” each week for six weeks, as follows.

1.        Choose a public imagedesigned for spreading, that has appeared publicly in one of your social media feeds this week.*The image can have been posted by others or by yourself. It can be a meme, a political image, an image of a celebrity, etc, but in the interest of privacy please do NOT include an image of yourself or a friend or family member.

2.        Screenshot, insert, or paste the image into the template (below).

3.        Write a paragraph of 100 to 150 word discussion about what the image is communicating. What social norms or assumptions does it represent? (E.g. what assumptions about relationships does Overly Attached Girlfriend represent?)Optionally, you may also include data about who posted the image (first names only in the case of people you know) and where it was posted in the paragraph.

4.        After doing this once per week for 6 weeks, write a final 200-250 word conclusioncomparing the images that appear in your social media feeds. What do the images have in common? What makes them stand out?For the best grade, use course concepts in yoru discussion, and use yellow to highlightthe course concepts you are discussing. (Course concepts could be any of the 5 C’s, Web 2.0, or boyd’s affordances of persistence, visibility, spreadability, and searchability.)

5.        Save or print as a pdf document and upload to the Assignments Dropbox by Monday 2/27 11:59pm. If you turn it in late, use the Late Work dropbox; points will be deducted. Do NOT email the assignment.

* If you do not use social media, you can analyze a meme or other public image contributed by users at a site you look at.

Template is below. Save this document to your computer with your first and last name in the filename AND in the header.
